What Tests Are Included in a Hormone Panel?
A hormone panel is a comprehensive set of tests that measure the amount of hormones present in your body. It is typically ordered to check for any imbalances in your hormonal system that may be the cause of certain symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and memory changes.
The following are some common tests included in a hormone panel:
- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) - This test measures the level of FSH which helps regulate follicle development, ovulation and fertility. It can also detect menopause or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
- Luteinizing Hormone (LH) - This hormone test measures the amount of LH released by the pituitary gland to stimulate ovulation. Low LH levels can indicate low ovarian egg counts. Higher levels can show higher risk for problems with endometriosis or PCOS.
- Estrogen and Progesterone - These two hormones work together to balance each other out during pregnancy and menstruation cycle. For example, if estrogen is too low it can lead to dryness or pain during sex, while too much estrogen can cause bloating or headaches. Similarly, progesterone levels can affect things like PMS symptoms or breast tenderness.
- Testosterone - Testosterone levels are important for both men and women’s health as they play a role in libido, energy level and muscle strength. Too little testosterone could lead to low libido, while higher levels could affect hair growth or male facial hair development.
- Cortisol and DHEA - Cortisol is famously known as the “stress hormone” because when you experience stress it rises and falls accordingly throughout the day; whereas DHEA acts more as an anti-aging hormone that decreases with age and has been linked to improved immunity and physical performance.
