How Do You Know You Are In Menopause?

Menopause is a natural process that occurs in women typically between 45-55 years of age. It marks the end of the reproductive years and is marked by the absence of menstrual periods. Symptoms of menopause can vary from person to person and typically include hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, insomnia and mood swings. Other less common symptoms include vaginal dryness, breast tenderness and incontinence.

Physical Changes:

  • Fluctuating hormone levels cause physical changes that can be attributed to menopause:
    • Hot flashes and night sweats – sudden feelings of heat or cold accompanied by sweating or flushing.
    • Vaginal dryness – decreased production of estrogen makes the vagina thinner and less elastic, leading to discomfort during intercourse.
    • Dry skin – skin may become drier as oil production decreases with aging. This can result in fine wrinkles or lines on the face and body.
    • Hair loss – declines in estrogen result in thinning hair on the scalp as well as other parts of the body such as arm pits and legs.

Emotional Changes: Menopause often brings about emotional changes such as depression, anxiety, irritability and memory problems due to hormone fluctuations. Additionally, some women experience libido changes during this time including decreased desire for sexual activity or an increase in libido due to hormonal imbalance.

Diagnosing Menopause: Diagnosing menopause is a multiple step process which includes hormone testing, physical examinations & health history review by your doctor/ gynecologist; however it is also important for women to keep track of their own physical & emotional symptoms so they can inform their doctor/gynecologist accordingly during their appointment(s). Some key point indicators are no menstrual period for at least 12 months & blood tests showing very low levels of estrogen & FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone).

Managing Menopausal Symptoms: There are several steps you can take to manage your menopausal symptoms; these include lifestyle modifications such as quitting smoking if applicable & being physically active amongst other solutions such as talking therapies like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), dietary modification (decrease intake processed foods & more plant-based foods) , HRTs (hormone replacement therapy) for symptoms particularly associated with hormonal imbalance -such as hot flashes & night sweats-, herbal supplements like Black Cohosh known for its anti-inflammatory properties amongst many others that are tailored according to each woman’s needs & circumstances .
